Proper installation and diligent maintenance are essential to realise the full service life of stainless steel flanges. Even the highest‑quality flange can fail prematurely if incorrectly assembled or neglected. This article provides practical, field‑proven guidelines for both tasks.
Installation Do’s and Don’ts
- Surface Preparation – Before assembly, thoroughly clean the flange faces, gasket surfaces, and bolt holes with a solvent‑free cleaner. Remove all dirt, grease, rust, and old gasket residue. Inspect the facing finish – scratches or grooves deeper than the specified roughness can cause leaks.
- Gasket Selection – Always choose a gasket that is chemically compatible with the fluid, suitable for the temperature, and rated for the pressure class. The gasket type (spiral wound, flexible graphite, PTFE, etc.) must match the facing (e.g., raised face or RTJ). Never reuse a gasket that has been compressed.
- Bolt Tightening Sequence – Lubricate the threads and nut bearing surfaces with a suitable anti‑seize (if permitted). Tighten bolts in a star or cross‑pattern in at least three passes (30%‑60%‑100% of final torque). Use a calibrated torque wrench or hydraulic tensioner to achieve uniform bolt load. Uneven tightening is a primary cause of gasket leakage and flange distortion.
- Welding Precautions – For weld neck and socket weld flanges, control the heat input to avoid overheating, which can cause grain growth or sensitisation. Use proper welding procedures (WPS) and preheating if required. After welding, allow slow cooling to minimise residual stresses.
- Alignment Check – Ensure that the pipe ends are perfectly aligned before bolting. Misalignment imposes bending stresses on the flange and can break the gasket seal. Use tapered alignment pins if needed.
Routine Maintenance Procedures
Visual Inspection – At regular intervals, inspect flange joints for signs of external corrosion, pitting, or discolouration. Pay special attention to crevices under the gasket and around bolt holes.
Bolt Tension Monitoring – Re‑torque bolts after the first thermal cycle (or as recommended by the gasket manufacturer) because gasket creep and bolt relaxation can reduce clamping force. Periodically check for loose or corroded bolts and replace them with identical grade and size.
Gasket Condition – If a leak develops, tighten the bolts evenly in small increments. If leaking persists, replace the gasket entirely – never add a second gasket on top.
Flange Face Protection – When flanges are opened for inspection, protect the machined faces with plastic caps or rust‑preventive coatings to avoid damage.
Environmental Protection – For outdoor or marine installations, consider applying a protective wrap or coating to the flange exterior (avoid sealing surfaces) to mitigate chloride attack.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Over‑torquing, which can deform the flange or crush the gasket.
