Hygienic Flow Control Challenges in Dairy and Beverage Filling
Milk, yogurt, and juice are food systems that demand the highest levels of hygiene. These products are not only ideal growth media for microorganisms, but their processing and filling operations also involve transitions across multiple temperature zones – refrigerated raw material storage (4°C), homogenisation and pasteurisation (65–95°C), and filling (ambient or chilled) – imposing extremely stringent hygienic and temperature‑resistance requirements on the valves and fittings in the piping system.
Fluid control in dairy and beverage filling lines presents multiple challenges. Microbial contamination risk is the foremost concern – any dead corners, crevices, or residues in the piping system can become breeding grounds for microorganisms, leading to product spoilage and food safety incidents. Adaptability to CIP/SIP cleaning and sterilisation is the second critical dimension – valves and fittings must withstand frequent Clean‑in‑Place (CIP) and Sterilise‑in‑Place (SIP) operations, including repeated exposure to high temperatures (typically 121°C), strong alkalis, and acid detergents. Flexibility for product changeovers is the third challenge – a single filling line often needs to switch rapidly among milk, yogurt, juice, and other products; valves and fittings must be easy to disassemble, clean, and reassemble to minimise downtime.
Sanitary stainless steel valves and fittings are engineered precisely to address these challenges. Their core characteristics are reflected in three aspects: material selection, surface finish, and seal design. In terms of materials, sanitary fittings are primarily manufactured from high‑quality stainless steel such as 304 or 316L, offering excellent corrosion resistance and cleanability, effectively resisting acid and alkali corrosion in dairy processing and preventing metal ion migration that could affect product quality. 316L stainless steel provides superior corrosion resistance in chloride‑containing environments (such as CIP detergents). For surface finish, valves and fittings are electro‑polished to create a smooth surface, with internal surface roughness reaching Ra ≤ 0.8μm and external surface Ra ≤ 1.6μm, effectively eliminating media retention dead corners. For sealing, food‑grade sealing materials such as EPDM, NBR, or PTFE are used, with operating temperature ranges from -20°C to 150°C.
Fittings are designed according to the no‑retention principle, ensuring no sanitary dead corners and facilitating CIP operations. All components are made of high‑quality stainless steel, with robust housings designed for hygiene and optimised flow and drainage capability. In practical applications, sanitary elbows, tees, valves, and other fittings are widely used across all critical stages – raw material receiving, homogenisation, cooling, and filling.
